Marble Sculpture - Portland, Oregon
A masterpiece carved from a single, 200 ton, block of white Pentelic Greek marble, “The Quest" consists of a group of five nude figures, the dimensions of each being five times larger than life. The inspiration behind the work is Michelangelo, but more humanistic in approach. The outcome is elegant and classical and it forms a rich contrast against the modern granite facade of the building it was commissioned for (originally the Georgia Pacific building now called the Standard Insurance building). It took Alex two and a half years to complete the sculpture and required thirty-five stonemasons to assist him.
